Semester 1 Debating News

Throughout Terms 1 and 2, the Kirrawee High School debating teams competed in both the Sutherland Shire Debating Competition and the Arts Unit Premiers Debating Competition. This year, we have a strong contingent in the Sutherland Shire Competition, including six junior teams and two senior teams. All students gained results and learning experiences that they can be proud of.

Our Year 7 and 8 teams, many of whom competed for the first time together, worked extremely well in their groups, winning 3 out of 6 debates. Our senior teams went on to win one out of three debates. This competition is run against a range of schools, from public to selective and independent schools and every year students gain wonderful new skills and insights into topical issues that affect the world around them. KHS has a strong tradition of debating and commends these students on their wonderful commitment to such a valuable experience.

In the Arts Unit Premiers Debating Competition, students in the well-established senior team have gained particularly strong results, debating their way through to the 11/12 state semi-final. This team, which consists of Arabella De Nett, Cooper Gannon, Nilou Kedemos and Ben Nolan, have also won their zone in the Year 11 Metro Competition. We eagerly await their next debates.

We currently have 4 junior teams in the Premiers Competition, many of whom have debated with passion so far. One team from the Year 9/10 Competition has won their zone and await their next debate at the inter-zone level. Year 7/8 Competition will commence next term and we can’t wait to see what our junior debaters have in store.

A huge congratulations to all teams who take the time to compete in this rigorous and academically enriching program.
