Speaking for the Planet 2019

Speaking 4 the Planet, a World Environment Day event that focuses on public speaking, drama, art and video competitions, was held on Monday 3 June at St John Boscos, Engadine. This annual event gives Sutherland Shire High School students the opportunities to create and express their ideas for a better world. With the UN’s World Environment Day theme as the starting point, students prepare and deliver punchy, quirky, creative and pointed speeches, dramatic performances, imaginative artworks or videos designed to influence the thoughts, emotions and actions of the audience.

This year’s World Environment Day theme is about air pollution – “The Air That We Breathe”. Two of our talented Year 11 Visual Arts students, Sophia Chakma-Hill and Eve Krombas, took part in the Visual Arts competition. The art students had about 2 hours to create an art work, impromptu, and teachers were not a part of the planning and making process.

The artwork our students created won the impromptu art component!! We are so very happy and excited about the win. It is also the third time in a row we have won this competition. The winners have be invited to speak at the 2019 Youth Eco Summit in Sydney in September to talk about their artwork, concept and involvement in Speaking 4 the Planet.

We would like to congratulate Sophia and Eve on this great win, and thank them for giving up their time and for being passionate about their world.

Well done girls!
