Kirrawee High School commemorated Remembrance Day today, albeit in a modified, and Covid safe way. Classrooms became a solemn space in which students and their teachers watched the live stream of the official Australian War Memorial Remembrance Day ceremony in Canberra.
Our school observed a minute silence at 11am and then reflected on the importance of this day in both Australia, and the world. With our Australian and Indigenous flags at half-mast from 10.30am until 11.02am, the whole school stopped in unison to pause and reflect on soldiers who have fought in numerous campaigns to protect our freedom.
Students were then able to create their own poppies using red paper whilst reflecting on the significance of this symbol of hope in commemoration of World War One, and numerous other conflicts involving Australian soldiers.
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
