Year 11 Biology Kickstart – Watts

A Kickstart workshop has been organised for Year 11/12 Biology. In this work shop, students will learn about an inherited disease – sickle cell anaemia and its genetic cause.
Aligning with inquiry-based learning, students will investigate the genetic cause of sickle cell anaemia with a case study. Their job is to determine whether a child has inherited the disease.
Students will perform
- DNA extraction, Lego-based polymerase chain reaction activity.
- Paper-based restriction enzyme digest and Gel Electrophoresis.
The workshop runs for approx. 3 hours.

The work completed on this excursion will form basis for the 10 hours of depth study component for enquiry questions from.
- Module 5 Heredity
- Module 6 Genetic Change
- Module 8 non – infectious disease and disorders.
If any student does not attend, they will need to complete the 3 hours work related to the depth study, in their own time prior to the assessment date.
Students will meet their class teacher Mr Watts at Kirrawee Station by 8.30am. Students are to purchase an opal ticket or use an opal card. Students will be dismissed from Kirrawee Station by 3pm
School uniform must be worn with proper footwear
